How to make the countdown to Christmas extra special for little ones.
For little ones, much of the magic of the festive season is found in the lead-up to the big day, when twinkling fairy lights are strung throughout the neighbourhood, handwritten letters to Santa are stamped and sent, and every sleep is counted. It’s easy to see why so many traditions have been established around this exciting time of the year, as treasured family rituals only add to the extraordinary, nostalgic atmosphere for kids. To help you get into the holiday spirit, here are some of our favourite traditions, old and new, to try with your own family as you countdown to Christmas this year.
December 1st boxes
Kick off the holiday season by surprising your kids with a December 1st box! One of the newer Christmas traditions will fast become a favourite in your household as your little ones look forward to receiving a gorgeous box filled with fun holiday gifts and activities. Start with a beautiful keepsake box or trunk, then simply fill it with Christmas-themed goodies and items the whole family can enjoy together. It can be as simple or extravagant as you please. Holiday games
There’s a good chance that some of your fondest childhood memories involve family games over summer holidays. Whether it’s cards or backyard cricket, the simple act of gathering with your loved ones is sure to bring loads of laughter long after Christmas dinner is served. Christmas cookie exchange
Kiddies love nothing more than helping out in the kitchen and a great way to get them involved in the festivities is by hosting a Christmas cookie exchange. Ask your friends and family to make a set number their favourite cookies or holiday treats, then invite everyone over to exchange their baked goods. Imagine Christmas cakes, the spiced tones of freshly bakes gingerbread and piles of chocolate chip cookies! Request that each guests brings along a copy of their recipe as well as extra containers to transport their goodies home. A thoughtful addition is to gift each guest a Christmas-themed tray to display their cookies.
Milk and cookies for Santa
Arguably the most important Christmas tradition of all, your kids will love setting up the perfect tray of treats for the big guy to enjoy after he makes his way down the chimney.
